Moving forward
Here's what I've been painting on for the last several days. I always want to skip out on the color comp but it really does help to move things faster if I know exactly how dark or saturated an area of the painting is going to be. It also allows you to preview and adjust the juxtaposition of colors and get all the mistakes out of the way without compromising your final panting. Plus the digital comp moves fairly quickly and definitely saves time in the long run. Esp. since a friend of mine gave me his old wacom tablet. It's a nice improvement from the mouse:)
Some people feel that there's no room for spontaneity when you use photo ref or have all your color/value comps. However, I always seem to have plenty of opportunities for spontaneous goodness:) My name is Eric....and I use color comps.

I find them helpful as well and need to do them more often. :) I love love love the little peek of this painting. :)
"Hiiiii Eric"
It's okay. I use them too... and I try to tell everyone I can how useful they are. Keep up the good work.
i would use them if had the patience. I should use them, i make many, many mistakes.
can't shake the inner illustrator can you Eric? someday you will become a true painter. when you do will you tell me how it feels?
lol damn you Bill!!! Well, everything in moderation right? A few of my previous paintings went through too many changes and were left floating in a painterly limbo with me feeling lost and with no sense of direction. Time is often a good way to gain perspective. However, we're all working on deadlines and time isn't always available. So, if you have a good idea of where the piece is going and how you want it to look, Awesome. If not, figure it out. If kinda, do a quickie color study. And keep it loose. That way you can work out the details as you paint and perhaps surprise yourself with the end result.
Paolo...didnt I see your Voltron avatar get served on Robot Chicken? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv1VSnJPrNA
Indeed, you did. Well worth the watch.
