Schoolism Interview with Bobby Chiu

I recently had the honor of being interviewed by Bobby Chiu for Schoolism. Though I've been a fan of Bobby's work for years we met for the first time at Spectrum Live.  He's a super nice guy and we had a great talk.  Hopefully, there are some insightful nuggets you can glean from the conversation.

Listen to the interview Here

It's several years old now.  But I thought I'd share a decent sized image of the painting I had pulled off the wall. The piece is titled "Divided by Time"

"The Cairn in Slater Woods" Progression

This piece just went live online so I thought I'd share some progress shots.  As always I highly recommend getting decent photo ref for your art.  The reference I had taken had some pretty interesting folds.  But these didn't really reflect what I had in my head so I took what I liked and made up quite a bit.  I hate it when fabric doesn't obey my wishes.  I have to give props to Irene, the Art Dir at Tor, for her direction on this one.  Totally worth the extra effort :)

Final Touches

I'm wrapping up the last of my pieces for my upcoming show at LeBasse Projects.  It feels good to be approaching the end of this body of work.  Also looking forward to getting started on some new paintings and some experimenting as well.  For anyone interested here's a facebook page for the show.

Progress

Still wrapping this piece up.  Though it's finally starting to feel like it's coming together.  Darkening up a few areas and made some changes in how the fabric was flowing.  Hope to finish soon so I can get started on some new work.

Final Drawing

Just finished the final drawing.  About to throw some paint down.  I intentionally left some area at the bottom a little vague for some organic spontaneity.

Something New

I just started working on this final drawing and figured I'd post a work in progress.  There's some really good information going on in the photo reference.  Though I'm not planning on using all of those folds and shadows.  Currently I'm still trying to figure out what I want to keep and what to let go of.  Finding the balance between my sketch and all the cool shit in the photo ref is almost always a difficult process.  I"ll be sure to get more wip pix as I go.  Stay tuned for more.

Below are some better images of my thumbnails I'm working from.
